We’re Back! COVID-19 Melbourne Stage 1 Restrictions https://staging-baysidefamilydentistry.kinsta.cloud/blog/covid-19-melbourne-stage-1-restrictions/ https://staging-baysidefamilydentistry.kinsta.cloud/blog/covid-19-melbourne-stage-1-restrictions/#respond Sat, 26 Sep 2020 22:16:16 +0000 http://staging-baysidefamilydentistry.kinsta.cloud/?p=4338

We are delighted to announce the State Government and the Australian Dental Association have given Bayside Family Dentistry the go ahead to resume our dental services to you and your families under the Government’s Stage 1 Dental Restrictions starting on Monday 28th September.

This means we can see you as normal for your important ongoing dental care. The current lockdown has delayed vital treatments and routine checks so dental issues would certainly have gone unchecked. This could prove hazardous down the line and so we are here to welcome all patients back for their examinations. All dental treatment is essential treatment, as it pays a part in holistic patient care.

We are still continuing to maintain the highest level of protection and adherence to strict COVID measures within the premises, so we can keep you, staff, and community safe during your visit.

When you return you will see a few changes that comply with our COVID safe plan.

We have :

  • a blanket rule of No mask No entry
  • thorough screening of all patients to assess risk factors
  • mandatory hand sanitiser at reception on entering and leaving the premises
  • mandatory antiseptic mouth rinse once in the treatment room before all treatment
  • increased appointment lengths to allow as little cross over of patients within the building at any one time.
  • decreased the number of seats in the waiting area and all family/non-patients are advised to stay home or in the car
  • only patient to be allowed into treatment rooms (except parents and guardians of very small children)
  • prevented delivery personnel past reception desk
  • preferring no cash payments

If you have any queries about any treatment you have missed for you or one of your family, do not hesitate to contact us.

Stay safe as always. We are so excited to see you all again at the practice.

Team BFD

We are here for you!

Question, what’s the point in having a local dentist to you when you can’t get in to see them? Especially in the case of a dental emergency? Are they closed after hours and on weekends? Eek, not good!

Studies show that patients are more likely to stay with a dentist or clinic if they are accessible. That is true, but at Bayside Family Dentistry we have a moral obligation to you as our patients (current and new) to look after you.

Bayside Family Dentistry has proudly been part of the Beaumaris Concourse for 46 years and counting. We love being part of an exceptional community and want to give back.

That said, any voicemails to the practice after hours are immediately pushed through to our mobiles and triaged. We will always see you in an emergency and have allocated slot times every day for these appointments. Don’t worry, we can even stay open beyond our closing times to treat your emergency.

Our Opening Hours

Thursday

Friday

What types of dental emergencies will we see?

  • Facial swelling. If swelling is affecting your speech, swallowing, or breathing go straight to emergency or call an ambulance.
  • Painful tooth that has not settled with painkillers and is getting worse.
  • Child facial trauma. If a tooth is knocked out (avulsed) tooth and the child has suffered a knock to the head, go straight to emergency. Put the knocked out tooth in a zip-lock bag with the patient’s spit and take it with you.

  • Soft tissue trauma.

Cosmetic Dentistry Part 3: Porcelain Veneers And Crowns https://staging-baysidefamilydentistry.kinsta.cloud/blog/cosmetic-dentistry/ https://staging-baysidefamilydentistry.kinsta.cloud/blog/cosmetic-dentistry/#respond Wed, 13 Nov 2019 05:11:18 +0000 http://staging-baysidefamilydentistry.kinsta.cloud/?p=4233

Crowns are custom made caps that fit exactly over the prepared tooth that sits above the gum. Their function is not only to strengthen the tooth itself but they can also improve their appearance.

Why are dental veneers or crowns required?

Dental veneers or crowns are needed to improve the strength of a compromised tooth. This will help prevent tooth fracture and ultimately prevent damage to the nerve.

Cracked molar tooth

Broken tooth cusp

Some fractures if attended to early enough can be treated with crowns.

The longer a crack grows, the higher chance it will hit the nerve, and cause pain.

Cracked teeth

Dental Crowns are used cosmetically too

Dental Crowns are great! They can:

Before and After photograph of Dental Crowns

  • Improve shape by covering chipped/crooked teeth
  • Improve the length of teeth, i.e. making them more youthful
  • Improve the general colour of all teeth
  • Close spaces
  • Mask dark teeth i.e. those that have been knocked /traumatised and have turned black.

This is done by a detailed process called Smile Design. A technique in collaboration with both dentist and dental technician together.

Veneers

Veneers are not structurally as strong as crowns, as they are thinner in cross section.

Cosmetically they can be used similar to crowns to:

Dental Veneers

Dental Veneers being attached

  • Improve shape by covering chipped/crooked teeth
  • Improve the length of teeth, i.e. making them more youthful
  • Improve the general colour of all teeth
  • Close spaces

They are not good for covering dark teeth due to the thinness of porcelain. Teeth that are generally broken down will require crowns instead.

Bridges

Dental Bridge

Before and after Dental Bridges

Dental bridges come in all different shapes and designs. Fundamentally, the prime reason for choosing a bridge is for replacing a gap in the mouth, by utilising the support of the neighbouring teeth.

A bridge can replace large and small gaps in the mouth. The supporting teeth, house crowns as described before, but this time, the two supporting crowns are attached to a false tooth. Or the two supporting crowns, ‘ bridge’ the gap.

It is a little trickier to clean underneath but your dentist will make sure you can clean it.

Can’t we just leave the gap?

Well, yes of course we can, but mother nature didn’t design us to have spaces in the mouth.

What follows is a natural drifting of the teeth (over months and years). Teeth also tip unfavourably into spaces causing food traps that are difficult to clean (so cavities will form), and abnormal biting forces as teeth not directly on top of the tooth.

Dental Implants

Dental Implant structure diagram

All On Four dental implants Bayside Family Dentistry

Dental Implants are next best thing to having your own missing tooth back again. Once a tooth is extracted, the bone starts to dissolve. However, placing an implant into the space shortly after a tooth extraction can trick the body into thinking there is a tooth there. Clever innit?

Dental implants have been around for about 60 years, so a lot of research has gone into them making them a very good long-term option for patients. Studies show that they have a 90% success rate even after 10 years. They can replace one tooth or the whole set of teeth.

Patients who choose to have their implants are those who have had spaces for many years and need to restore form and function in the mouth.

Cosmetic Dentistry Part 2: Cosmetic Bonding https://staging-baysidefamilydentistry.kinsta.cloud/blog/cosmetic-bonding/ https://staging-baysidefamilydentistry.kinsta.cloud/blog/cosmetic-bonding/#respond Wed, 16 Oct 2019 22:21:53 +0000 http://staging-baysidefamilydentistry.kinsta.cloud/?p=4223

Chipped, crooked teeth, discoloured or teeth with gaps can all be improved with cosmetic bonding. Bonding with composite will help improve the appearance of teeth immediately.

A lot of people can feel self conscious with their smile if one or more of the above applies to them. Simple bonding can be an instant improvement, sometimes no drill and needle is necessary.

How easy is dental bonding?

Easy as 1-2-3! Just 3 simple steps.

Firstly, we condition your teeth to accept the bond, then a bond is applied, finally the filling itself and set with a light. Done!

Why do people get cosmetic dental bonding?

Apart from people requesting bonding for cosmetic reasons, bonding is also used to reshape / replace lost tooth structure from grinding teeth or trauma.

Who can get dental bonding?

Anyone! As Long as the patient can open for a few minutes to have the glues applied and filling inserted,

Dental Bonding is a quick way to transform the smile whether its 1 tooth or the whole smile. They are also cheaper than porcelain veneers or crowns. The good news is , if bondings chips away, they can be repaired very easily.

What are the advantages of Dental Bonding?

  • Quick to apply, instant results
  • Easy to repair
  • Can hide crooked , discoloured, fractured teeth
  • Help against sensitivity
  • Cost-effective

What are the disadvantages of Dental Bonding?

  • Can chip easily
  • Wears down over time
  • Absorbs stains then looks unsightly
  • High maintenance

If you would like us to show you a quick demo of what your smile would look like with bonding,

Cosmetic Dentistry Part 1: Teeth Whitening https://staging-baysidefamilydentistry.kinsta.cloud/blog/spring-is-here/ https://staging-baysidefamilydentistry.kinsta.cloud/blog/spring-is-here/#respond Wed, 18 Sep 2019 01:20:06 +0000 http://staging-baysidefamilydentistry.kinsta.cloud/?p=4200

Spring is here! (OMG finally) and summer is not too far away. Even that should get you smiling! Yip, summer means weddings, graduation balls, lots of summer parties, and…..PHOTOGRAPHS.

So if you have been hiding your smile away, ask yourself why? Is it because of a broken tooth, yellowing teeth, missing teeth?

Whatever it is it can all be fixed in time.

You know 47% of people look at your smile first of all over any of your features?

In this 3 part blog on Cosmetic Dentistry, we will be helping you with ideas on how to get your smile… photo ready.

Teeth Whitening

Whitening your teeth is the easiest treatment you can have to instantly improve your smile without any work! Tea, coffee, wine, smoking, drugs, genetics, all compound and play a part in the colour of our teeth. Beigey, brown teeth are easier to whiten than the greyish teeth.

At Bayside Family Dentistry, we offer high-end Teeth Whitening procedures.

In Chair Teeth Whitening

Short of time? Aren’t we all? Well, sit back and relax as you have your teeth whitened professionally in the chair. Just like Kim Kardashian here.

This treatment offers the highest concentration up to 35% under the supervision by a dentist, not anyone else! These typically show results much quicker than the home treatments, even after your first go. Dentists are only legally allowed to dispense these products over a certain percentage.

Dentist supervised treatment have an advantage versus over the counter products. The main one is the dentist can determine if whitening should be performed at all!

Patients who have decayed teeth, or infected gums, have crowns, white fillings should not have whitening. This is why a consult is strongly advised prior to the procedures. Some people have whitening treatments in beauty salons and shopping centres, without having a dental check, If there is undiagnosed decay, then putting an active whitening ingredient on a tooth with an exposed nerve is dangerous!

A combo of the in chair and at home whitening, can lift your teeth colour up to 10 shades whiter!

At Home Teeth Whitening

For those who wish to do it at home, this cost-effective treatment allows you to do it at your own pace and in the comfort of your own home. A lower concentration is safe to use without supervision. Studies show this method over a longer period of time, gives the best results.

The home kit includes your custom fitted trays that fit exactly over your teeth. Good fitting trays means the whitening gel is contacting the teeth ONLY, and not gums or soft tissues. So no nasty irritations are expected. Home kits from the dentist are much safer than the over-the-counter whitening kits, as these are unregulated.

So how does Teeth Whitening work?

Here comes the science bit. The hydrogen peroxide is the active ingredient in whitening products (H2O2) which is delivered as itself or in a stable form called carbamide peroxide. This breaks down into H2O2 in contact with water, so basically the chemical reaction is exactly the same as hydrogen peroxide itself.

Is Teeth Whitening safe?

Yes. Studies show it is safe and effective. Lower concentrations have been shown not to cause any damage to the enamel. Higher concentrations are offset by using fluoride gels that are applied by the dentist

During all teeth whitening procedures, you will experience some degree of sensitivity which is short-lived ( no pain no gain right?). This is perfectly normal and there is no risk to the nerve. If you experience severe pain, stop treatment right away and inform your dentist.

Results will vary from individual to individual.

Your smile is your best accessory for the summer season!

What is Sleep Anpea?

Sleep Apnea is a serious disorder and potentially life-threatening. It occurs when breathing is interrupted during sleep.

Who can get Sleep Anpea?

Anyone can get Sleep Apnea.

In fact, 60% of men and 40% of women over 40 years of age have sleep apnea and don’t know it!

What sort of symptoms should I look out for?

There are several key symptoms to look out for, but there are many others. Generally. people who have this will:

  • Repeatedly stop breathing
  • Snore
  • Repeatedly waking at night for no apparent reason
  • Have daytime tiredness which leads to increase in all sorts of accidents and clumsiness.

What types of Sleep Apnea are there?

There are two major types of Sleep Apnea:

  1. Obstructive Sleep Apnea
This is the more common of the 2 and is caused by blockage of the airway, by the collapse of the soft tissues of the mouth and throat.
  2. Central Sleep Apnea
The brain fails to signal for muscles to breathe.

How do I know if I have Sleep Apnea?

Look for these major symptoms:

  • Choking, gasping or stopping breathing for long periods of time
  • Repeatedly waking from sleep
  • Feeling tired during the day
  • Morning headaches
  • Dry mouth
  • Night time toilet breaks
  • Irritability
  • Difficulty in concentrating

Who is at risk from Sleep Apnea?

Anyone , that’s the scary thing! Those most at risk are:

  • Overweight male over 40 years old
  • Large neck circumference
  • Large tongue or tonsils
  • Small jaws
  • Family history of sleep apnea
  • Reflux
  • Blocked nose ( deviated septum, allergies, or sinus)

Who does Sleep Apnea mean for my teeth?

Well, as you snore , the teeth grind against each other with ridiculously, heavy forces, called bruxism ( a whole other topic to discuss). The cheek muscles the masseters are one of the strongest muscles in the body and transfer the force to teeth. Long term, this may mean :

  • Sore jaws and muscles
  • Cracked , chipped and worn down teeth
  • Future root canal treatments, crowns or even worse, a lost tooth or teeth

Sleep Apnea quick self assessment!

The Epworth Sleepiness Scale is used to determine the level of daytime sleepiness. It helps us establish your condition. You can use the standard questionnaire below. The scale to use is as follows:

0 = would never doze or sleep.
1 = slight chance of dozing or sleeping
2 = moderate chance of dozing or sleeping
3 = high chance of dozing or sleeping

Now, using those scores, score each of the following activities:

  • Sitting and reading ____
  • Watching TV ____
  • Sitting inactive in a public place ____
  • Being a passenger in a motor vehicle for an hour or more ____
  • Lying down in the afternoon ____
  • Sitting and talking to someone ____
  • Sitting quietly after lunch (no alcohol) ____
  • Stopped for a few minutes in traffic while driving ____

Now add all your scores up. The total score is your Epworth Sleepiness Scale score.

If you score 10 or more on this test, you should consider whether you are obtaining adequate sleep, need to improve your sleep hygiene and/or need to see a sleep specialist. The score guidelines are:

  • 10 or more is considered sleepy
  • 18 or more is very sleepy

Getting a professional Dentist’s opinion

After your self scoring, Dr Suzanne should be your first port of call to assess your risks of sleep apnea. She works closely with an Ear Nose Throat specialists in Melbourne Sleep Centre and will refer to them if she suspects sleep apnea, therefore a sleep test may be advisable. After the test Suzanne will liaise with the ENT specialist to discuss the outcomes and treatment. It may involve:

  • Surgery
  • Cpap machine
  • Specialised night time splint
  • Combination of above
  • None of above

Patients who Dr Suzanne has assessed and treated for sleep apnea, have claimed they didn’t know what it felt like to have a good night’s sleep, until now.
